Nintendo Figured Out How to Make "Lose Some Weight, Fatass!" Sound Cute
As a graduation gift, I gave my buddy Shannon (congrats, by the way!) a Wii Fit this morning. We’ve been using the living hell out of it ever since. This is by far the most entertaining peripheral for a game system I’ve ever used, and it’s definitely an absolute blast to exercise with.
We’ve both put in 60 minutes of “exercise time” (i.e. it’s given us 60 “Fit Credits” each) on the game so far. This thing is kicking our asses (probably mine more than hers, as she’s in better shape than I am). Unlike the folks who got offended when this thing called their kids “obese,” I blinked and realized it’s officially time to lose some weight when this thing sized me up and said “overweight,” with the line just barely hovering beneath “obese” (less than 1 point away from the obese line according to its BMI calculation).
The way this game is put together and presented in a lighthearted, goofy, and entirely non-threatening style. It permits multiple participants to create their own profiles, and the game tracks daily progress (your recorded weight and your daily activity in the game) for everybody. Each player can set a weight loss goal and track their progress towards it.
It does a pretty good job of creating incentives and motivation to keep going, both by unlocking new games and modes as you put in more time (it doles these bonuses out pretty frequently, too — in just a “credit hour” of exercise, at least five things opened up for us) and by unlocking more difficult/advanced options for the modes already available (more reps, longer routes, etc.).
This is definitely worth the price of admission. And yes, I lucked out in finding one — Wal-Mart had just set out a whopping two of them (ugh) during the nightly restock and I happened to be looking around that section at the right moment to spot it. I scooped it up the instant I saw it. I am proud to report I did not scoop up the other one to scalp on eBay

So much fun!
I seriously love my new toy.
It lets you set long term goals (for example, I want to lose 15 pounds in 3 months), and it tells you how much to lose per week and keeps your calender updated with your daily weight and BMI.
And it’s not just for the morbidly obese (or 330 pounds as the box states is the limit). I am considered “Normal”, but I’m still having a blast gaming off the baby fat. The balance games are really fun, but my favorite is the yoga and strength training. As for aerobics, the hula hooping wins by a long shot (now that I actually get how to catch the freaking hoops). I’ll get the hang of the stepping class too…
So yea, any readers interested in this product should totally make the investment. 60 minutes throughout the day seems totally achievable to me, and it’s 60 minutes of intense workout.
I wish it had a better sound track, though. XD
Good point about the music
Yeah, it’d be neat if you could put in your own music — the Wii’s built-in Photo Channel supports music (though, inexplicably, they removed support for MP3s in the latest version and added support for AAC … what the hell?) in its slideshow mode; it’d be sweet for this to support a similar feature (shove an SD card full of MP3s into the slot and have it play music from your collection during the events that don’t require specific musical timing1). With the unpleasable fanbase ranting and raving that the Wii can’t (currently) load games or channels directly from SD cards (they can be stored there, but must be transferred into the Wii’s system memory to run), and Nintendo so far standing firm on the issue it seems unlikely we’ll see an update to Wii Fit to support something esoteric like this
It’s still a really fun thought though.
1 Of course, the Übergeek™ in me says “but you could have a computer do BPM analysis on each track and write a metadata file that Wii Fit can read, so it could use “accurate” music for the timing-critical events too!” Yeah — I don’t let him out to play very much
