Heh, well, I think it worked. AcidFree ate all the pictures I’d loaded into this beast, but that’s fine since I’d been migrating to Gallery anyway (the image munchage was quite possibly my own damned fault, so don’t misread this as a condemnation of the AcidFree module). You might come across [acidfree:1234 blah blah] tags on occasion; I’m figuring out a reasonable way to find every entry with those tags in ‘em and clean them up.
Here’s the stuff that’s changed in the upgrade to Drupal 5.3 (from 4.7) that I’ve noticed (and/or that you’ll notice):

… heh!Ummm… there’s probably more coolness under the hood, but I haven’t found it yet. The good news is all this is generated now with existing templates/code; I didn’t have to change any files (except a minor change in the theme’s stylesheet) to make things look like this. That sure beats hacking the hell out of the old theme!
So, onward and upward! (The funny part? They’re already shipping Drupal 6.0 betas

Permissions & Ads Fixed
Because I replaced (i.e. stopped using) a permissions system after the upgrade, Drupal decided nobody but me should have any access to any nodes on the site at all. Oops.
Fortunately, there’s a “rebuild permissions” option that makes it completely dump all the old permissions data and replace it with new stuff based on current settings (there’s nothing meant to be “hidden” on the site, so this just throws the gates open).
Also, I noticed some incredibly stupid (and ironic, given my consumer protection and anti-fraud mindset) ads crowding in on the AdSense stuff on the left side, so I blacklisted those stupid domains to stop them ever turning up again. Google says it can take up to 6 hours to update things, and I’m sure there’s about a million or so more scams and con artists just queued up to advertise. Oh well … I’ll blacklist those too
