Time to Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!

Let the happy dances begin! Here’s a good opportunity for every single person out there who’s ever said “I’d buy music if it were cheaper/if the money went straight to the artists/if there wasn’t DRM crap in the digital version” to put up some cash.

Have you got five bucks handy? For a whopping five dollars, you can buy a downloadable copy of Nine Inch Nails’ newest release, Ghosts. This is straight from the artist, folks — a legitimate purchase, and a lawful copy that’s all yours.

  • You can choose your desired download format (they’re all the same price):
    • insanely-high quality, tagged MP3 (320kbps)
    • FLAC (a lossless compression format, playable on any computer, and can be encoded to MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, etc., yourself as needed)
    • Some Apple-branded FLAC equivalent (also lossless)
  • It includes a 40-page PDF of liner notes, and a bunch of icons, wallpapers, graphics, and other digital extras.

The lossless formats (which, again, cost the same $5) mean you can literally re-create the CDs exactly as they were mastered — a bit per bit exact copy of the originals.

If you’re not sure whether you like the music or not, ‘tis not a problem. You can legally download (from the same site) the first disc (of the four disc set) free of charge just to see if it’s worth buying.

This is exactly how this should be done. My hat’s off to Trent Reznor for doing this. He’ll have my five bucks shortly Smiling

Ka-ching!

If you’re having trouble getting your download going (or if you have trouble actually buying the $5 download, or the other offerings), be patient, wait a few minutes, and try again; it took a bit of time to actually buy this. They’re getting hammered, and it’s good to see lots of people actually buying the album! This is how we’ll support and encourage artists like this to keep producing music, and to keep releasing it inexpensively, without involving any obnoxious middlemen. Figure if a million people pay five bucks for the digital version of this release, the artist gets five million dollars, a million people legally enjoy an album, and everybody (who counts, anyway Smiling) wins.

If you haven’t bought your copy, what are you waiting for?
